REBUILD YOUR RATING

These cards are available to those with a less than perfect credit history. They are also great for those who have not had credit before, as you may need to show lenders that you can use a credit card responsibly before they let you access their best deals.

You will find that these cards usually have a fairly high interest rate and may come with a low credit limit, but if you clear the balance in full each month, the rate won’t matter. After showing that you can manage one of these cards responsibly over a relatively short period, you may be offered a credit limit increase and you should be able to apply for cheaper credit card with better features.

If you know your credit rating, select it by hovering your mouse over the panel to the right and clicking on the appropriate rating. If you don’t know your credit rating, click the button to calculate it for free. This will match up your rating with lender appetite to give you the best chance of success with your application.

The Ulster Classic card has one of the highest interest rates of all mainstream credit cards in Ireland. The main reason for this is that Ulster are willing to take on higher risk applicants with this particular card, meaning that you could be accepted with little or poor credit history. You don’t get a bad deal either, with an interest free period of 3 months on all purchases and a low rate balance transfer offer which is better than most mainstream cards. This card is suitable for those who need to build their credit rating, or who may have had some issues repaying debts on time in the past.

The APR on this card appears to be very high. This is partly due to the fact that you can only get a limit of €450, but the government stamp duty of €30 still needs to be paid each year. If you are not going to spend more than a few hundred Euros on an alternative card, then the interest rate may not compare that badly to other student cards available. Having said this, you don’t get any introductory offers or balance transfer deals. This card is easy to get though; so long as you are a third level student and at least 18 years old, you should be accepted.
