Current Accounts

The main reason given for not switching current accounts is that it is too much hassle, or not worth the savings. All the main banks now provide a current account switching service and will usually offer you an interest free overdraft period to ensure there are no problems making payments while everything changes over. Current account switches can happen within 7 days, so it really shouldn’t be a hassle.

When you look at the choices of bank account available to you, you can save a lot on fees. Whether you just want a basic bank account that doesn’t charge you for making direct debits, or if you lodge more than €2,500 a month so want to reap the benefits some providers will offer.

If you know your credit rating, select it by hovering your mouse over the panel to the right and clicking on the appropriate rating. If you don’t know your credit rating, click the button to calculate it for free. This will match up your rating with lender appetite to give you the best chance of success with your application.

  • Bank in branch or using the internet

  • Maintenance Fee €5 per Quarter
  • 16.2% APR Overdraft

Has the largest network of branches in the State, meaning you are very likely to have a branch near you, even if you live in a rural area. This bank charges one of the highest annual overdraft fees, but the interest rate is lower than other major providers. The overdraft facility could work out cheaper than others, but only if you use it often. Bank of Ireland also has one of the highest quarterly maintenance fees and you have to pay for most services on your account, but you do have the benefit of 24 hour telephone and internet banking. In a recent survey only 14% or respondents gave Bank of Ireland 9/10 or 10/10 for customer satisfaction. Although this figure may be nothing to write home about, it was the highest of all current account providers. Transaction fees can be waived, but only if you keep a relatively high credit balance of €3000 in your account.

It has one of the cheapest overdraft facilities of all the major banks, and banking costs can be waived if you hold a balance of at least €2500. This includes the monthly maintenance fee and all types of transaction fees (Direct Debits, standing orders, ATM withdrawals). A subsidiary of the AIB group, EBS still offers most banking services free of charge, with customers only paying for ATM withdrawals and over the counter transactions. If you lodge €1500 per a month, or keep a balance of at least €500, then your first 5 ATM withdrawals are also free of charge. EBS does not offer an agreed overdraft facility, and going overdrawn is therefore very expensive. If you are likely to use an overdraft, then go for a different provider. Its own survey says that 82% of customers are satisfied with customer service but an independent survey ranks EBS joint last with Ulster in the number of customers who would strongly recommend them. If you want low fee banking at the expense of an overdraft, and if you are not fussed about customer service, EBS is worth a look.
